At La Mare de Carteret Primary School we aim to help our pupils to develop enquiring minds and to begin to understand the world in which they live. We believe that the teaching of a foreign language encourages a positive attitude towards other cultures and enhances children's understanding of the world around them. We feel it is important that children have an awareness of the historical and cultural links between Guernsey and France.
In line with the expectations of the States of Guernsey Education Council, French is taught in Years 5 and 6. Children are introduced to spoken French in a fun way, through games and practical activities. It is important that children develop good listening skills and, wherever possible, children are given the opportunity to listen to native French speakers to help them develop a good accent. We use'La Jolie Ronde' scheme as well as a variety of online resources to support our teaching. Pupils are introduced to basic vocabulary which will enable them to take part in simple conversations, such as with a French friend or in a shopping situation.
Above all, we aim to help our children to develop the confidence to 'have a go' at speaking a new language. Pupils in Year 5 have the opportunity to take part in a residential trip to St Malo during the summer term - this gives them the opportunity to use their language skills, as well as developing their independence and cultural awareness. It is also a great time for having fun with friends and teachers!!
