Guernsey French Club
Guernésiais is the language of Guernsey and is pronounced 'JEHR-nehz-yay'. Known as 'Guernsey French' or 'patois', it is actually a form of Norman.
In the year 2000 there were about 1,300 fluent speakers and perhaps twice this number spoke some phrases. Most native speakers are aged over 65, leading the language to be classed as 'Endangered'.
At La Mare de Carteret Primary we are doing our bit to keep 'Guernsey French' alive! We are lucky enough to have the support of Mrs Le Normand, a friend of our school, who comes in every Thursday after school (2.50-3.30pm) to run our popular club for KS2 children.
The children learn about Guernsey culture, learn words and phrases, sing songs and play games in an active, fun way.
In the spring term there is the opportunity to represent our school by entering the Guernsey Eisteddfod as group to recite a poem in Guernsey French.
