Guided Reading
Since September we have made guided reading a big priority in our school, to boost reading attainment and encourage reading for pleasure. As such, guided reading sessions are planned for and take place in Years 1 to 6 every week, with learning support assistant (LSA) time being provided for each class. The guided reading session enables a group of children to share a text in one session or over the course of several sessions. The text will be levelled at the reading needs of the children and an adult will work with the group to support the reading, comprehension and pose questions about the text. There will usually be a follow up activity related to the book they have read.
Years 1 and 2 have a 30 minute guided reading session each week with LSA’s working with groups as well as the class teacher. Years 3 to 6 have a 30 minute guided reading session each week with an LSA or the class teacher plus a 30 minute follow up activity. Each LSA has a guided reading pack of resources available to help engage children in responding to the text such as a finger puppet, post-it notes and special pens.
