Using Numicon to Support Mathematical Development
Numicon is an internationally award winning classroom based resource used to support learning and teaching in maths. It is used in many pre-schools and primary schools across
Numicon aims to facilitate children’s understanding and enjoyment of maths. It uses a multi sensory approach and the equipment allows children to see and feel how numbers ‘fit’ together.
While it is particularly useful in Early Years and KS1, it is increasingly used to support learning and teaching in KS2 classrooms and also as a way to support those older children who are struggling to grasp key concepts in maths.
Numicon shapes help children see and feel how numbers ‘fit’ together and to have a better understanding of the number system.
Using Numicon at Home
Due to support from the charity ECOF (Every Child Our Future) we have a number of Numicon At Home kits that we are able to loan to our reception children and their families for up to half a term.
The kits are designed for parents and children to enjoy learning about numbers. They offer parents a series of fun and easy to play activities to encourage understanding about early number and arithmetic.
Kits are also available to buy from school at a reduced cost of £45. Please see Mrs Elliott if you would like further information.
