At La Mare, we offer sea swimming twice a year for all year groups, although due to transitions, Reception only join us for the Summer sessions. We have 15 members of staff who are qualified as lifeguards to deliver these sessions. The children start with learning about confidence and safety in the sea, in a practical manner. Further up the school, they are able to develop these skills into sea swimming techniques and the safety of doing so. We have a large number of wetsuits and sea shoes that the children can borrow, or they can wear their own. The children thoroughly enjoy these sessions...so do the staff!
In Year 5, the children have the opportunity to go on two sailing afternoons per class. We have also been able to take Year 3 as part of their residential for the past few years. The children start in the classroom and learn by using a sailing simulator before they are allowed on the model yacht pond in a boat with a partner. Here they can explore their sailing expertise and try to use the wind to make the most of their experience.
As part of cross-curriculuar activities, the children have the opportunity to go rock pooling for science and the study of living things, or art. They also have the opportunity to learn about coastal erosion and how features are formed as part of geography. We also have a very strong outdoor learning programme at La Mare, which may well lead the children down to the beach too.
The Year 6 residential includes activities such as pier jumping, surfing and sea swimming too. We have a wonderful natural facility right on our doorstep and we utilise that whenever we can to enhance the children's education and life skills.
