Welcome
La Mare Primary School
La Mare de Carteret primary school is a thriving community school situated in a very picturesque location very close to some of Guernsey's most beautiful beaches.
We have very high expectations of our whole school community and believe that we give all our pupils the opportunities to develop by recognising the uniqueness of each child. We understand the importance of creating strong partnerships with parents and carers in order to ensure their children become successful, independent young learners of tomorrow. We value these strong partnerships and are fortunate to have many volunteers working with us in school.
We teach in an inclusive atmosphere where every child's learning journey is valued and supported. We believe every leader is a leader of learners with SEND ( Special Educational Needs and/or Difficulties) and every teacher is a teacher of SEND. Our warm, friendly and welcoming environment helps our children to take advantage of a stimulating, creative curriculum, which is flexible enough to meet the diverse learning needs of all our pupils.
As a Silver accredited UNICEF Rights Respecting school, we believe in ensuring children's rights are at the heart of everything we do. We listen to our children and act upon their feedback. We recognize that children are unique and have different backgrounds and beliefs, we are accepting of all.
We support all our children to ensure they become: Responsible Citizens, Effective Contributors, Successful Learners and Confident Individuals.
We teach our children the skills and principles of Resilience, Respect, Listening and Communicating, Independence, Questioning, Collaboration and Reflection and underpin everything we do with a Growth Mindset.
We believe children need the opportunity to think and be challenged in their thinking. We employ an approach to teaching called Philosophy for Children (P4C) which challenges children to think more critically.
Healthy bodies and minds are key to successful learning and as a school we take every opportunity to embrace our beautiful surroundings. Our dedicated staff ensure there are numerous opportunities for children to enjoy and learn in and from the outdoors. All our children from Reception to Year Six have swimming lessons at Cobo Bay; one of the most picturesque settings on the island. In July 2019 we were awarded the AFePE Quality mark for Physical Education with distinction and in 2017 we were accredited with the Silver Award by the Learning Outside the Classroom council and during the same year we also received the Guernsey Healthy Schools award.
We have a very successful, bespoke POD unit which provides high quality learning opportunities to include young children with SEMH needs within a mainstream provision rather than being isolated within a special school with limited opportunities for role models or appropriate peers. Our POD was opened in 2016 and is staffed by 8 dedicated and trained educational professionals.
As a team of professionals, we love our school and our children and we are always looking for ways to improve the life chances of every child.
We welcome visitors to our school at any time and if you require any further information, please contact me.
