Welcome to Year 5!

Spring Term  Literacy

Boy in the Girls Bathroom

In literacy, we have enjoyed reading  ‘There’s a Boy in the Girls’ Bathroom’ by Louis Sachar. We explored key themes and wrote a persuasive letter to one of the main characters, Jeff. We tried to convince him to remain friends with the school's worst behaved pupil- Bradley Chalkers. As we delved deeper into the book, we came to realise that Bradley wasn’t the villain he was portrayed to be. In fact, he was misunderstood by everyone until his behaviour started to improve by an intervention from a school counselor. For our final piece of writing, we wrote a narrative story based on the theme of a character being misunderstood by their peers.

Spring Term Maths

Fractions and equivalence were the hot topics this term. After a week of place value consolidation, we revised what fractions were using as many different types of apparatus as we could. While some children reinforced their understanding of unit fractions, others managed to calculate mixed numbers from improper fractions. We used fraction walls to help identify equivalent fractions and then we used this knowledge and understanding to order fractions which had different denominators.

Spring Term Science

Transport of water

In science, we have been learning about how nutrients and water are transported within animals, including humans. We started by looking at how the digestive system and the circulatory system work. We learnt that both systems are linked as the digestive system receives nutrients from food and transfers it to the blood. The circulatory system then carries those nutrients through blood vessels. We discovered that the kidneys play a crucial role in this process because they clean the blood of waste toxins and turn them into urine.

Spring Term - Other Curriculum Areas

In Art, we learnt about using observational drawings, as well as using single lines to draw an outline. Using sweet wrappers, we created a collage, added in details and then used coloured pencils to finish the details.  In Computing, we learnt about safe searching, the use of copyright and adapting images for our projects. We used keywords to search for more information on the Maya, a topic we will be completing in History next term.
