Year 4

Welcome to Year 4!

Spring term Literacy

This term our Literacy work took  us to 'Pugs of the Frozen North' by Philip Reeve & Sarah McIntyre.  We followed the adventures of Shen and Sika on their wacky race to get to the Snowfather, powered only by 66 pugs!

'Wolves' by Emily Gravett is another "fact-ion" book like "The Pebble in My Pocket" which was the basis of our spring term work.

Finally, our Literacy work took us to explore a variety of narrative poetry. Using noun phrases, fronted adverbials and pronouns. We identified features poets use and learn, recite and wrote poems that told a story.

Year 4 used a storyboard to describe what was happening in a video sequence and then used their notes and improvisation to record a race commentary voice over for the video.

Spring term Maths

In Maths, we continued to build on our knowledge of decimals, fractions and the four operations (+, -, X & ÷).  We also continued to develop our understanding of measuring and shapes, with a focus on time and also some data handling. Along with our weekly problem solving, tables practise and passport targets we stayed busy.

Spring term Science

This term, we learnt all about the human body. We started off by looking at the different types of teeth we have and the function of each. We learnt that we have teeth called incisors, canines, molars and pre-molars. We had a visit from a real life dentist who taught us how to maintain healthy teeth and gums and why this is so important.  We also learnt about the different kinds of flavours our tongue can taste and the role the tongue plays in the digestion of food.

We also learnt all about what happens to food inside our bodies. We travelled through the human digestive system and discovered that every organ your food passes through plays an important role in turning that food into energy.

Spring term Other Curriculum Areas

This term, in History we travelled to ancient Egypt, introducing people, places and kingdoms. We looked  at the  old, middle, new, Greek and Romanised kingdoms and their achievements before moving on to archaeologists and Tutankhamun.

In Geography, we revisited water cycles again and looked at the causes and consequences of tsunamis, tornadoes and hurricanes.

In Computing, we learnt the basics of HTML and computational thinking.
